An Elder's Qualification, Part 1

How does a church choose its leadership? In 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Paul lays out a framework of qualifications for the office of overseer, and what is striking is that God's standard looks almost nothing like the world's standard for leadership. Where the world reaches for charisma, credentials, and popularity, God reaches for character. This passage invites us to examine what we actually value when we think about who should lead us spiritually, and whether those values align with what Scripture calls noble. The elder's life is not a separate category of Christian living but rather a visible and accountable expression of what God is working in all of us. As we sit with this passage, we are drawn to ask not only who among us is qualified to lead, but how each of us is growing in the kind of Christ-shaped character that makes the gospel credible before a watching world.
