The Leadership of Elders

Aug 9, 2026    Kyle Wilcox

What does it look like when God organizes his people? In this message, we explore one of the most practical structures God has built into the church: the office of elder. Drawing primarily from 1 Peter 5:1-4, we discover that this office is not a human invention but a divinely ordained role described through three rich, overlapping terms: elder, overseer, and shepherd. Each word paints a picture. Maturity, watchful care, and tender guidance all come together in this one calling. The message challenges us to think carefully about how authority and service can coexist, and how God uses imperfect people in structured roles to bring his people toward maturity in Christ. For anyone wrestling with what healthy church leadership looks like, this exploration offers both clarity and encouragement.
